CSSE Chair on Federal Prosecution Regarding Threats Against Arizona Election Workers

July 28, 2024 – In response to an Alabama man’s recent guilty plea to charges related to sending threatening messages to Arizona election workers in Maricopa County during the 2022 Arizona primary elections, the Committee for Safe and Secure Elections Chair and former Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone issued the following statement:

“Election workers are the stewards of our fundamental democratic system. Yet in today’s volatile political climate, they have become the targets of political vitriol, leading to rising rates of harassment, intimidation, and violence.

“Threatening or attacking election workers is unacceptable and has no place in America’s free and fair electoral process. Holding perpetrators accountable for these heinous acts is essential to deterring such behavior in the future, and CSSE applauds the continued efforts of the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force to ensure that those who seek to destabilize our democracy through menacing and harmful actions are met with the full force of the law.”
